Hi folks, I need help with the proper installation of those Tempo water separation fuel filters that use the canisters that look like car oil filters. The instructions that came with it are very limited. They say to install the filter on the “suction/vacuum” side of the fuel pump but don’t mention the primer bulb. I installed it on the fuel tank side of the primer bulb, because a long time ago someone posted here that fuel filters should always be on the fuel tank side of the primer bulb (When I moved my old small inline fuel filter in response to that post I got a 200 rpm boost on w-o-t).

Here’s the problem. No matter how much I pump the bulb, I can’t get any prime. Before I move the bulb over to the other side, am I doing anything wrong because I don't want the filter to impact performance (should I maybe fill the filter with gas?)

I had to lengthen the fuel hose to allow for installation. I am now running about 14 total feet of 5/16" fuel line. motor is a 1990 Suzuki DT55.

suzukidave WATER SEPERATOR GOES BEFORE THE PRIMER BULB ALSO YOU HAVE TO FILL THE WATER SEPERATOR FILTER WITH GAS OR MIXED OIL TO PRIME THE UNIT.

I just installed the same one on my boat. Make sure the arrows on the filter body are correct for your hose placement. I.E, the in arrow is the line coming from your tank, and the out arrow goes to your primer bulb.

Hi, thanks for the quick responses. The arrow direction is correct. If you have to prime the filter by filling it will I have to do that again if I run out of gas? Has anyone installed two bulbs in this situation?

you only have to prime the new filter once, fill the new filter with gas mix install it also apply a light coat of oil to rubber gasket squeeze the primer bulb check for leaks if none you are on your way.

Re: installing a fuel filter

when you install the filter between the fuel tank and the primer bulb. You will then squeze the primer bulg a number of times inorder to fill the new filter with fuel, this may flood the carbs but not to worry, its only for a very short time.
