Hi all

I have a question on the installation of a Stingray Hydrofoil. When I went to install it on my 1987 150hp Johnson outboard, I notice that I would have to drill through or close to the trim tab, that bothered me a bit so I emailed their website and asked them if that was right, to drill through or close to the trim tab, and I was expecting to get alternate installation instruction, but this was their answer:

Thanks for your recent purchase. Yes, on all the OMC products you will be drilling through the trim tab area. This is very common and should not present a problem. On all offshore test boats we have OMC motors and have not experienced no adverse affects. If you have any other questions please contact me.

Thanks and Happy Boating,

Marine Dynamics, Inc.
Customer Service Dept.

My question is are they correct? Can I drill through the trim tab?

Re: Installation of Hydrofoil

Hi Cpoe...yes you can drill through the trim tab. But what I would do first is make sure the tab is where you want it. The trim tabs are adjustable so that the torque of the engine can be "counter-balanced" by trim tab adjustment. Outboards naturally torque right, when looking at the rear of the boat. This causes the rig to want to turn right if the torque is strong enough and you let the steering wheel slip in your hands. If you have this problem, adjust the tab in the direction of torque. Then install the hydrofoil. Good Luck?

Re: Installation of Hydrofoil

Cpoe2  -you DON'T need to drill your trim tab relocate the rear mounting holes on your hydro foil ____ align it then drill front set of holes first , I will post some pics of my (01 Ocean Pro) Start from bottom(mine is a little off center, bit walked on me) on rear holes with small bit, then counter sink hydrofoil with a 5/8 flat wood bit just enough the get washers&nut flush with top of foil then drill though with 1/4 to finish up, fill all the holes and away you go, still adjustable ;) look in my photo ablum at the bottom http://members.fishingworks.com/jomac/

Nice pics.

Drill new holes in the fin.... I guess I wasn't thinking "out of the box". Thanks all for the input.
