Hey guys, 84 evinrude 9.9. Took boat to lake today. Ran motor. I would stop periodically and adjust the trim to find out which is the best position. Since it’s not power trim. Last time I lifted motor out to adjust trim, my damn prop was gone!!! 😳. What could have caused this? I know I had the cotter pin in the prop nut, Just ordered new prop and hardware.. When I put this new prop on, do I crank this nut TIGHT as it will go? Thx

Make sure your cotter pin is stainless steel. No you do not crank the nut as tight as possible snug is good.

Thx. That’s the only thing I didn’t replace on this motor. Went with the old cotter pin... my old prop had the converging ring, can’t find those anymore... costly mistake

I know how you feel. I once lost a prop because the old (probably steel) cotter pin rusted away. It was a long tow back. Now I make sure only stainless steel pins for me!

I think I got so excited that this motor was finally pumping water and running, I forgot to tighten it down all the way and bend the cotter pin correctly... Good thing I wasn’t too far out, used my trolling motor on high... well now I’m off to my new project. Motorcycle rebuild...
