Install clutch on prop shaft

1998 25 hp 2 stroke short shaft

Does it make any difference witch way it goes on. Looks to be the same to me either way.

What is the model? Year of manufacture is not important when servicing, but precise model/serial is critical. If you don't have the correct model, you could also order an incorrect part. Did you get the correct prop shaft?

Yes, the sliding cylinder with the ears -- the dog -- could be installed incorrectly. Pay attention to where the clutch pin fits into it. On some models it's sometimes not in the center. If you flip the dog around backwards, you will introduce double the error, causing the LU to be in one gear (reverse) all the time when it is assembled. There is a line cast into the dog to indicate proper orientation. Very important that the push rod, steel ball and clutch holder all be oriented correctly as well.

The cam drives the push rod, which acts on the steel ball, which operates the clutch pin and spring holder. Push too far, and you will always be in reverse.

A Factory service manual, available from any dealer (including me) would help you a lot here.

That is exactly what it is doing. As long as I leave the 2 bolts that hold the propshaft cover on it works finr, but as soon as I tighten them down the last little bit it locks into reverse. Thanks for you help! I would buy the book, but as soon as I get it back together it's going to a new home.I replaced it with a 40 Yamaha.
