Is it necessary to remove the engine from the transom in order to install the power tilt unit onto the motor. This is on a 1991 V4 evinrude 88hp SPL.

After i removed the manual damper assembly I was not able to slide the power tilt motor/resovoir and piston assembly into the bracket on the motor. Am I missing something? The resovior hits the bracket and there doesn't appear to be enough room to push the unit into place.

it looks like it has to go in from the transom side of the braket in order to slide into place.

Any tips?

Lighting2....welcome to the forums.

Can you give us a little detail on the unit you want to install? Is it new, used or something that looks like it should work?

The correct OEM part number for the TNT unit for your engine is 438528. This number supercedes 434359.

Keep us posted.

If I remember correctly, that trim system has 3 bolts on each of the stern brackets holding it in place. You may have to support the motor and loosen the tilt tube nuts and transom bolts so the stern brackets can move apart slightly to allow the trim unit to slide into place.

Thanks for the response. I haven't checked back for a while. The unit is a used piece, that is supposed to be appropriate for my year motor. I will check and see if there is a pn on it. I have compared it to other motors and it appears to be correct.
I do not have a factory manual, only a clymer manual and it does not address this well.
