Ok, I have the option of buying a full 350 Mag/bravo combination today, and today only for my project. I am restoring a 1986 Carlson CVX-18 that cam with a 350/ Alpha, and i would love the stick the mag/ bravo combo in it. Will the weight of the Bravo unit be alot more than the Alpha and cause problems with the stern of the boat?

Thanks

Thanks Bondo!. Do you think it would be too much for the CVX?

In Trailer Boats Magazine's "Marine Power 2004" edition, Mercruiser weights are listed this way:
350Mag MPI/Alpha 952lbs.
350Mag MPI/Bravo 1 1025lbs.

Not too much of a difference, and not enough to adversely affect your boat. I wouldn't stick two batteries and a bunch of gear back there, though.

Got to assume you're talking about a B1 J. as TW shows the weights for also; I would think you'd be fine.
B3....that'd probably be a different story.

Actually Mark, same edition, B3 weight is listed at 1046. So only 21 more lbs than the B1. (It's got to be the props! ;) )

No, there is a lot more in the lower unit between a B1 and a B3. The B3 has more bearings, 2 shafts instead of 1. 3 gears instead of 2, and bigger housing and all.
Props are a lot more than 21 lbs difference all by themselves.

I know what's different about a B3, I owned one for 8 years. And those weights probably don't include the props and any drive.

But are you saying that the weights that Mercruiser supplied to Trailer Boats Magazine are wrong?

No, I'm not saying Trailer boats info is wrong, I'm just saying it's not because of the props, and was referring to your comment to Mark.

Sorry that my wink didn't clearly convey my message and that you misunderstood. That was meant to mean it wasn't the props, but that the extra shaft and stuff accounts for the 21lbs. But that it still is not a huge amount heavier than a B1.
