Hello All,

I've got a 1993 40hp Mercury outboard (serial - OD152581) and my power trim is giving me problems. It only works the first time you press the button (both up and down) and then all it does is click. If you let it sit for about 20 minutes it will work again but only the first time. When it does work it is extremely slow, at least 2 minutes to go from full down to full up, and it is noisy. The wires going to the pump have been spliced which worries me because of possible water intrusion. I think I need a new motor and possibly the trim cylinder rebuilt? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How's your battery? If okay, maybe resplice those connections. If they corrode, amps get blocked.

I'm no expert as mine hasn't worked since I got my boat because of a rusted out motor but if it is noisy I would have to suspect the motor. I pulled mine to figure out what my problem was. It wasn't hard at all. Just undo the bracket on that side while supporting the motor on that side. I used a piece of wood wedged under the bracket on the side I was undoing and it was fine. Pull it off and see if it is toast.

Thanks for the replies. The battery is new and I respliced the connections with heat shrink butt connectors. The motor is just so slow and noisy I have a feeling its on the way out.

Try replacing the motor brushes. It work for me and only cost about $3.00 at the dealer. You have to solder them in with a good gun. You 'll see if that the problem when you take the cover off.
