Inline fuel filter positioning....

I recently bought a used bass boat and have been busy upgrading and fixing it up...

i noticed that the fuel line from the tank to the filter (looks like someone previously changed it some time ago) is really long....

I want to shorten the fuel line to get rid of the slack....

My question is this:
should the inline (with the see through glass) fuel filter be positioned vertical or can the position be horizontal?

right now it is vertical.... the line from the gas tank slopes to the bottom of the hull... then curves up, where the fuel filter is..... i noticed that the fuel filter empties out fast..... so i was wondering how much fuel line i can cut..... seems to me that it should work laying on it's side, horizontally..... then maybe it wont empty out as fast?

But im here asking you guys that know before i go cutting away!

Thanks!

Welcome to iboats Techlord.

Vertical or horizontal is fine.

if you are running built in tanks, i strongly suggest a fuel/water separating filter mounted in the splash well, tank- filter- bulb- engine.

Re: Inline fuel filter positioning....

Tashasdaddy,

Do you have any suggestion on the correct size fuel/water separating filter appropriate for a 150HP Mercury carbed V6 motor? I want to install one on my boat and want to be sure to not restrict the fuel flow causing a lean condition. I am thinking of getting one of the Racor filters with the see-thru bowl. I like to idea of easily seeing whether the filter is finding any water in the fuel supply.

The Racor filters come in 30gph, 60gph, 90gph capacities. Aside from GPH, the other spec that I guess makes a difference is head port size, whatever that means:

- The 30gph and 60ph have a head port size of 1/4-18NPTF
- The 90gph has a head port size of 3/8-18NPTF.

Any opinions on what the best choice is or would any of these be OK?

i think you need to contact the merc service dept, or racor. to be sure. i know more about Johnny/rudes than mercs.

Thanks a lot fellas! this site is the best!

I have a 16' fiberglass bass boat with a 1989 75hp Merc in great condition.... it came with just the "glass fuel filter"......

can u tell me what brand (or even model number) of fuel/water filter i would need to replace that with?
and it would just replace the existing one right?

thanks again

oh, if anyone need any computer advise, no problemo, just ask, i would be more than happy to help yah out too
