I'm going to repost this question as I should have titled my 2 threads differently as it is too confusing. Does anybody know did my 1986 115hp come with a sound blanket inside the cowling? Where I might find one? Or could I make one?

The sound blanket was made of loose weave, like scattered hay, stiff but loose, could compress if you squeezed, would spring back when released. It was about 1" thick, completely covered in plastic to prevent intrusion of liquid components of different types. It lined the center removable clamshell cover and did not interfere with the mounting of the cover.

I don't remember how it was secured. You could make one I guess and secure it with silicon glue to the cover to keep it in place. I don't have the name for the filler but it had to be resisient yet resistant to heat to some extent.

By the early 80s, Mercury discontinued putting the Sound Blanket on the Inline 6 Cowl Wrap. At first I thought it was just a Cost Cutting move, however, it might have had something to do with the Blanket smothering the Switchboxes, causing them to get hot. I added the Sound Blanket to my 84 115, and started having Switchbox Failures shortly after.
Contact Cement was used at the Factory to attach the Blanket. I didn't notice any significant change in the Sound of the Engine, before or after.
