Is $450 to 500 a fair price to replace:

Power Head gasket

Water jacket gasket

Two additional gaskets in the area of the power head gasket

The owner showed me where the power head gasket is blown out on the port side.

Shop labor is $60/ hr

It sounds fair, provided they do a good job.
Its getting it apart thats the hard bit(without snapping bolts).

Re: Inline 6 gasket replacement

That is not too bad. The water jacket gasket is a pain since the bolts are so small and break (common to most gaskets). The positive part is if the bolts break on the water jacket gasket ..... there are openings behind each one and can be replaces with a nut and bolt. ASK if the gasket replacement includes flat surfacing (re-surfacing) of the water jacket. It is important and gives a good seal.

The trickiest gasket is the exhaust gasket.

And $60/hr is not too bad either. It is hard to find a mechanic that will work on the older motors. Keep that guy!!

All post above are correct. 60 bucks an hour is cheap.
