Initial bunk setting--how to measure?

I should have paid attention in math class!!

OK, I'm setting the bunk width for a new trailer. There's no height adjustment, so it looks like the narrower the bunks are, the higher the boat. For the initial setting, I had planned to just measure the vertical distance between the bunks and the lowest section of the trailer, subtract the distance I want between the keel and the bottom sliders on the trailer (I was thinking three inches) measure up the transom to the point that matches the number I came up with when I subtracted, draw a horizontal line across the transom, and measure the distance between the two places where the line intersects the edge of the hull. I assume this would be the best centerline for the bunks. I assume I'll also have to fidget around with it once the boat's on, like perhaps setting the front wider than the rear and such. Do I have the right idea? Any other advice?

Thanks,

Steve

Measure out, from the keel to a point where the bunks would best fit.

While measuring go straight out from the keel, do not follow the bottom of the boat up.

The keel will also be the centerpoint of your trailer width.

Setting the bunks up to where the chine rides on the bunks is usually a pretty stable place for the boat to ride.
