Re: Inherited Mark Twain with 85 horse Johnson (semi trashed) HELP
Howdy, Bclawson. On your engine: remove the bonnet and clean out any wildlife. Remove the spark plugs and spray about 3 seconds of WD-40 into each cylinder. Gently turn the flywheel by hand through four or five revolutions. If you feel any "clunks" or "scrapes" stop and try to determine if the resistance is in a cylinder against a piston or somewhere else. If surface rust on cylinder walls or rings is the problem, pull the heads for inspection of cylinders.

If you get through that cleanly you are probably going to get her running with minimum cost. Go buy a Shop Manual.

Dismantle, clean and reassemble your fuel pump and carbs. If gaskets are dry or brittle, rebuild them.

Replace the water pump impeller. Drain and refill the gearcase.

Hook up a fully charged battery and test the starter. While it is turning over, check that each spark plug wire will arc at least 1/2" to the block.

Install new spark plugs.

Prepare fuel in a clean tank with new hose and primer bulb. 6 gallons of unleaded, alcohol free regular to 1 pint of Walmart Super Tech or Mercury Quicksilver outboard oil, TC-W3 rated. hook it up, pump the primer bulb until hard.

Attach "ears" to a water hose and place on water intakes. adjust water flow until it squirts out the side of the "ears".

Crank her up, choking conservatively until she smoothes out.

Nice Job!!

Red sky at night. . .
JB
