Information required on Teal model/history

A couple of years ago I got sensible and decided to chang from my beloved Flether GTO speedboat to a more practical sports fisher and boat myself an old 16ft Teal with a Yam F50 outboard.

Since then I have not really seen much information about these boats except that I think they were built in the 70s and you could get them in at least either 16ft or 22ft length. They seem to have been as popular back then as Warriors and Quiksilvers are now (in the UK anyway), and there are still a lot of them about.

Does anyone have any information about them, or know if there is an owner's website etc as I would love to know more about the history of the boat (where it was made, what year, model variations/specs/weight etc).

Here's a link to a pic of mine so you know what I am on about - if you live in the UK then the chances are you've seen these in local harbours as there are loads of them here on the Isle of Man for starters!

thats a great old classic. you need a much taller winch stand and bow stop. the bow stop is suppose to be over the boats bow eye. the reason is in an emergency stop, it keeps the boat from moving forward in the the tow vehicle.

Re: Information required on Boat model/history

Good point - I can't believe I hadn't noticed, thanks!
I'm not sure what the trailer was from but it's not from this tub! There's a horrible section on the back of the trailer that needs to be cut off, and the skis on it are rotten so I will replace them with new rollers.

I've had her more than 2 years now but have not managed to do much work aside from removing a horrible high level second cuddy (admittedly useful for keeping your face dry when it's choppy!), adding a VHF radio and GPS etc. So the trailer and the cosmetics still need sorting.

Thanks for the comments though - I've liked Teals since I was a kid and am pleased at having one now as she certainly seems to be a very solidly built boat. Do you know anything more about them by any chance, like what the company was that made them or any online info about them?

I'd be really grateful!

no, i know nothing about it, other than a nice looking rugged water boat. it seems the the european market built much deeper hulls, than the american market. obviously for the different boating conditions.

Well JimD, you've got me. I cannot find any info. on Teal boats either. One site mentioned that the Heron Boat Co from UK. produced them but I couldn't find anything about that co. either.

Good luck and let us know if you find out more.

Successful Boating,

Thanks for the comments chaps.

Art - do you have a link to the site you found that comment? I am drawing a blank about the boat so far but I'm sure persistence will yield results.

I intend keeping the boat for a very long time, and having just bought a house with my wife I now have a nice place with a well equipped garage 2 minutes away from the beach.

I can't wait to get stuck in on tidying the old girl up on the cosmetic side of things (although apparently there is a lot of work to be done on the house first.... :/)

Here's a pic of my dear old Fletcher which I have just sold. She's served me well for several years now, albeit not the most practical tub for fishing for things like Tope, which I enjoy doing. d:)

Good luck on the search. Unfortunately I am in the same boat as you (pun intended). I have a boat that was manufactured by a company that is no longer in business. They went out of business before the internet was what it is now, so there is little information available.

As for the work on the house vs. boat, here is what I do: I go out into the backyard to work on a project for the house, I let the missus see me working diligently on said project, she's happy; then later I just happen to walk over to where my boat is and the next few hours are spent on the boat!!!

Good luck and welcome to iboats!

Ha ha! Thanks mate.

I must admit that's what I already try to do, but it's more that I don't have lots of money for buying stuff for the boat with all the housey stuff going on at the moment.

I'm amazed there seems to be no information about these boats on the web as they are really common. I walked round the harbour outside my office yesterday lunchtime and saw 4 of them (it's only a small place here!), and there are more down in the town where I live so it's weird that they're a bit of a mystery.

I did some searching on Heron being the builders but I think they only built longboats for canals that happened to be called Teals too.

Only thing I can find so far is that I THINK the shorter versions of the boat 16-17ft are sometimes referred to as the 'Teal Sportsman'. That's it!

hi jim, i my self have a teal 18ft, that i have just full restored which has take 8 months to do, i myself have be trying to find informantion on teals but with no joy. I use my teal on the northeast coast of england and find that it handles sea condistions quite well. The clinker design makes for a strong hull and a great plane on the water. hope u find out about Teal Boats would be intrested myself, happy hunting.
