I haven't even seen this lovely yet. I have a hunch that is has the prestolite distributor that 2 of the lobes on the point cam are really reaching. I haven't seen 1 for along time. I do seem remember that the points were set in a certain way. May be wrong! But since mother merc made i-boats pull the manuals, I'm looking for help.
Thanks

need to be more specific than mid 80's
229 or 4.3
1984/1985 was the switch from the semi-even fire ignition 229 to the even fire 262(4.3L)

Yea, that wasn't much of question. My memory didn't help anything either. I remembered 2 lobes being longer which is way wrong! It's the semi-even term that would come to me either. The boat is an '84 w/175 hp.
I googled semi-even prestolite & first or second link went to an i-boats forum on it. I looked a little there previously but it didn't show up. You were in on that one too, Howard. What a guy!

Thanks again guys.

There was/is some info on that in the Merc training notebook from 93 on that "semi even fire" setup. I think on pages 169 or 170. Problem is, my pages are missing

As I recall, Achris has this manual also. I'll send him a PM and ask.

I do have that manual, but unfortunately I am a little far from it at the moment (Saigon to be precise)... If the questions still open in 4 weeks, I'll be home and look into it....

I did find this in one of the service manuals... Also the points gap is to be set on the rounder of the lobes.

What exactly do you need to know?

Ya know, some times the harder you look for things the less you see in the obvious.
I looked in the OEM manual several times for that picture and couldn't find it. and that is the exact picture I remember from the training manual. Now I look again and it's there ..................... Page 4B-3

Re: Info on mid 80's V-6

I knew the distributor stab had to be right on! That's the main thing I recall. Wasn't sure about gap/dwell, if that was any different than any other.
Wouldn't be a big deal but it's a "road trip" and I want to be prepared. Boat has not been used for 2 maybe 3 seasons. Friends dad isn't doing well & now he wants it gone, of course (right now) & no trailer on top of it!
Thanks for all the input everyone!
