I have an old three speed trolling motor that I would like to put a speed pot on.I chatted with some other guys and got mixed feelings on putting a 50 watt 2ohm rheostat in series with the 12volt power lead to use for trolling anybody got any advice.I'm sure the pot will get hot but more worried about ruining my motor.

Re: Infinite speed control

Do you want cheap or do you want good. Cheap- you need to know the amp draw at full power, then multiply amp X 12volts that will tell you the watts you need to disapate. Good- go to mcmaster.com or grainger.com and look for a dc motor controller, it will send pulses to the motor to control the speed.

A rheostat will also drain your batteries pretty fast.

If you are disapatting 50 watts in the rheostat, the power has to come from somewhere.

The speed control is a much better idea.
