I have just noticed lately that I seem to be burning alot more fuel. The only change has been that I filled up with the new E10 gas. Has anybody had the same experience?

You have probably been burning E10 for years and just didn't notice.

A change in the cleanliness of the hull, weight or balance of the hull will all cause changes in fuel usage.

A general health check would be first in order .What are those compression numbers? How is that ignition output? What are we dealing with in the first place?A nice little sobriety check on that fuel you are buying may well be in line.

This problem turned on like a swich. Nothing has change with the boat dynamics, what has changed is the fuel in our marinas. Along with the increased consumption I now have the fuel system alarm going off when I pull back from cruse to an idle. I'm going to top off tomorrow, change all the filters and check for any sign of water.

See if you can get some good gas that is not E 10, that stuff tends to bring lots of problems with it, i won`t feed it to a 2 stroke.

Re: Increased fuel consumption

Does this relate in any way to the melt down of my 90TLDI motors, other than the fact they are not "smart" enough to detect fuel problems, and besides the fact that I have 4 micron racor drainable filters in every fuel system?

The E10 fuel is supposed to be OK in outboards as long as it if fresh. As it ages in an open system it attacts water, which I remove with the filter, but what else happens? Is the water bonded to the ethanol or can it just keep on attracting water forever?

As the lighter hydorcarbons evaporate, leaving more ethanol and increasing the ethanol/gasoline ratio will the octane on the fuel steadily decrease, making it even harder for engines without a det. sensing brain box to survive?
