In board - engine is inside the boat, along with a gear set. The drive shaft goes through the bottom of the boat or the transome,

Out board- engine and gears are mounted out side the boat.

Inboard/Outboard - engine is inside the boat, but sterndrive (tranmission & propellers) are outside!

Re: inboards, outboards, stern-drives?

It's really easy. On an inboard (and V-Drive), if you look at the stern (rear) of the boat, you would see that the prop is on a shaft that is extending from about the middle of the boat, and there is a rudder behind the prop. The prop and rudder is completely under the boat. Most ski specific boats use this setup. On an I/O (inboard/outdrive), you will see an assembly attached directly to the transom (flat part of the rear) that has the prop. It looks similar to the lower portion of an outboard. Most multi purpose boats have this. Get a boat magazine like Trailer Boats, they have pics of all the various types. Hope this helps...

OH I SEE!!!!!!

so inboards would have like a trim control on the outside, but stern drives cant cause it has a prop shaft going from inside the boat?

im just wondering cause im doing research on bayliner trophys (getting it sooner or later) and theres 3 engine types, inboard, outboard, and stern-drives

the stern drive engines say u dont need to pay for the propeller!

I/O (stern drive, same thing) has trim control, but inboards (and V drives) do not have trim control (except maybe for trim tabs), as the prop is in a fixed position due to it being connected to the shaft that run from the middle of the boat. You had 'em switched.....Thats why I like outboards, doesn't take rocket science to figure out its an outboard.....
