I may be looking at a boat with a pair of V-drives. If running on a hose, can you safely check shifting on the trailer? When I say safely I mean is the stuffing box OK run dry temporarily? I think they are supposed to seep some which is why I am worried . . .

Re: Inboard testing question

We usally squirt them with a hose or some type of lube first, any type of soap mix works

Not only the stuffing box, but be sure to do the cutlass bearing also.
