Both the same. Inboard/outboard (I/O) is also called stern drive by some. The engine is in the boat (inboard) and whats on the outside of the boat looks like an outboard motor bottom half.

Ditto. In the early days I remember hearing both and the stern drive term just disappeared over the years.

And to go along with that, probably the majority of people call I/O's 'inboards'. I/O's have a long ways to go to be a true inboard, they are technically closer to a 4 stroke outboard with the engine mounted inside, vs an inboard.

... and just in case your sentence structure should be read as 3 objects (instead of two): A true inboard is where the entire drive is "in" the boat, with only the shaft and screw (propeller) out. The most recognizable of this type are the competition ski boats where the engine is right in the middle of the boat, and nuthin' hanging off the back.

An Outboard is probably the most obvious - motor as a complete unit hanging off the transom of the boat.

... and everyone else covered sterndrive or I/O.

Welcome aboard Thales!

It makes a lot more sense if you use the original term, "Inboard/Outdrive", for I/O.

"Sterndrive" is my second choice for terms, though it is a bit vague because all three propulsion systems drive from the stern.

....not to mention now there are 'pod' drives which take on a whole new dimension on now being 'under' and not 'out' hanging off the transom...

Technically an inboard drives from the bottom as the prop is not "behind" the transom although it is near the stern. :)

And also V-drives, which are still inboards. Just relocated the engine to make it look like an I/O. And for the fun of it, could throw in jets as true inboards, where all the spinning components are located in the hull.
