Hello- I'm new here and am really enjoying reading this forum. Great info!
I am looking to purchase an older used 18-19' runabout type boat for fishing (trolling) and cruising the family around Puget Sound and nearby lakes. Being new to boating I would prefer ease of maintenence and operation over fuel consumption and power. Couple questions (more later I'm sure):

#1: What motor set up and hp would best fit my needs?

#2: What to stay away from in regards to both boat and motor? I've read some comments on here about the 470 Mercruiser, Bayliner, etc. Would like to read more.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Re: Inboard, Outboard, or I/O for 18' boat?

I own one of each. I have an OB powered 16' tri-hull and a I/O powered 19' runabout. Each has it's own strong points and which to choose is personal opinion. I like the ob as it seems more maneuverable, but that may be more in the boat length/style than anything else. Usually an ob is lower maintenance. I know changing the oil on the I/O is a pain, but I sure like the rumble of a small block V8 behind me.... The ob will usually give you more room in the boat, but will often use more gas if it is 2 stroke. You may want to do a search of the forum as there have been countless discussions of this in the past. I would say test drive one of each and decide which you like.

For ease of maintenance, I'd have to go with the outboard. If anything does go wrong , it's easier to get at and work on. As far as engine size, get one thats reasonably close to the maximum rated HP for the boat. You will be much more satisfied with the boats performance than with one that's underpowered. Welcome to the forum.
