I recently bought a boat that i was told has a ford 351 in it. i pulled the serial# off the exhaust manifold and it told me that it is a 1971 and by doing research i found out that it is a windsor because the headers only have 6 bolts instead of 8 like the cleveland. now my question is that my starter has crapped out but the auto stores tell me they cant find one that looks like mine for the year im telling them and the one they can find is discontinued. I also tried to find a distributor cap and they could not find one that was a screw down type for my model. im trying to find out just how and where i can find out the year and model on my engine.

Re: inboard engine

That is good advice, I just had the starter on my ford 351 rebuilt locally for 50 bucks

You probably have a old Prestolite starter as well as a Prestolite distrubutor, neither of which are going to be familar to the local auto parts house. Have starter rebuilt, and find the dist #, should be on a metal tag then post it for us. 'nutcase
