In the market for a new carb

Hey everybody, I finally have my backfiring problem narrowed down to the carburetor. 1993 Crownline 225CCR, 7.4 Litre (not magnum) w/ bravo I. I plan on ordering a new carburetor sometime this week, how I'm a litle unsure of which way to go. The guy who owned this before me thought he would get a few extra ponies out of this motor by trashing the stock intake and installing a Weiand Action Plus square bore intake manifold. I know a rochester spread-bore won't bolt up to this intake manifold (without an adapter) so I'm in the market for a weber, holley, or edelbrock. Does anybody have any suggestions on which to buy? Also, the engine is stock with exception to the intake manifold. Should I be looking for a 650 CFM or 750 CFM? Thank you all for your help.

Take Care

The Weber,+ the Edelbrock are Both knockoffs/copies of the Carter AFB carb....
And,.. Are My Choice of Carb., Easy to set-up,+ Easy to repair if nessessary............
As well as there's No gaskets or fittings to Leak, below the fuel level..... 1 piece body casting......

Go with a 750cfm for a big block.... 650 is Too Small...........

I agree with Bondo. The Edelbrock is a great carb and easily adjustable with a metering rod and jet kit, unlike the Holleys wich are a pain in the *.

I would change the manifold...

because of the spread bore design, those carbs work a little better at lower throttle settings...
Better throttle response, and perhaps even a little better economy.

They all will make good power.

Thank you all again for your help on this. Rabidfish, the intake I currently have is a square bore weiand "action plus". Are you saying the stock quadrajet manifolds flow better, and get better fuel economy?

Also, Summit Racing has an Edelbrock Marine EDL-1410 (750 CFM) for $285.95. I'm leaning towards ordering this one.

Thanks again,

I Don't Think the Type, or Make of Carb. Really Matters with that........

RiverRat,...
Without going thru my catalogs to find Which manifolds you're talking about,........

If you want to use 1 of the AFB clone Carb.s,......
You're looking for a Low-Rise manifold with a Square Bore bolt pattern......

The AFB clones Do have a dual bolt pattern, but fit Better on a Sq. bore manifold.....

The 750cfm that you Need is a Squarebore Carb........
Are you saying the stock quadrajet manifolds flow better, and get better fuel economy?
No,... It Doesn't nessessarily Flow Better.....
But, Being a Low-rise it Will give better low-end power, due to smaller ports giving it Better Velocity.....
Which Will help increase your mileage....
A High-rise needs a Much Better Exhaust system to make much of an Improvement............
