Re: In process of changing water pump found gear oil

hi, when i pulled my drive shaft out it had oil on it, it sits in the gearbox having passed through a seal below the water pump plate, so that is fine, the impeller is bigger than the housing, when you install use some vaseline (petroleum jelly) smeared in the housing and turn the drive shaft clockwise as you push the housing gently down onto the impeller.
Not sure on the O rings, would have to strip mine down to check, would have thought that they are on the drive shaft ? but have a look in your manual if you have one for definative locations.

hope this helped

Gear Oil there looks normal since that's looking down into your gearbox/bearings/oil. Try not to drop any trash in there if you can help it. I don't know about those O-Rings, but you didn't see any there to replace? Put some grease on impeller and carefully force it into the stainless steel cup, being dead sure the vanes are leaning the same way as the old impeller. Good Luck!

My water pump has 2 flat nylon washers that space the impeller away from the water pump housing. One bellow and one above the impeller, inside the housing. May be the answer to the the o-ring question?

looks like on inside the cover assembly (#23 on diagram) theres a seal. bout the closest size to the oring that came in the kit.
The oring to the shift rod is alot smaller then the one with the package. never found a oring of that size that the kit came with or any orings like it period. wierd  haha

Re: In process of changing water pump found gear oil

UPDATE: *PROBLEM* I got everything back together and had the hardest time getting the lower unit back into the driveshaft housing. the lower unit driveshaft would spleen into flywheel i could turn it and hear the impeller moving.
I had the hard time getting the shift rod to turn and spleen into the drivshaft housing where the (shift rod coupler is at) when i did and started tighening nuts down at a certain point i heard cracking. well i seen the top of the driveshaft housing where the shift rod is at is pushing up and cracking *SEE PICS* (added when i get home)
1)is this ok or does the housing need to be replaced/somehow repaired?
2)Also the manual states to shift the motor to foward gear, why is that?
3) where is the shiftblock? it says to move the shift block to get the shift rad to spleen up better:confused:
Please help guys!

Not sure where that pic is from.Post a better location shot.
The reason that you put it in gear is it lines up easier and it insures that you don't misalign the shift shaft and not have trouble shifting gears.
In forward gear the prop(pulling up on the right) can be used to turn the shaft to facilitate going back into the power head. Then the shift shaft is automatically aligned as it's in gear.J

on this diagram #1 driveshaft housing towards the front i pointed (in red) to the hole where the cracks are at from after tightening the nuts down and only able to get them down to a certain point before the the cracks happened. best i can do right now at work.

im alittle confused on what you mean by (puliing up on the right). do you mean turn the prop clockwise? seems like when i turned the drive shaft the prop moved but turning the prop didnt move the drive shaft. i know im missing somethign here forgive me. haha.

Re: In process of changing water pump found gear oil

The drive in forward gear. From the rear of the drive.Pulling up on the right hand blade(next to the rock see pic) will cause the drive shaft to rotate into the power head.
The shifter and drive must be in forward. The shift rod on the drive if it's turned to the left it should go into forward(I think).Pulling up will make sure it's right.
If it doesn't connect then it's not in gear.
This should make it easier to install.
If for any reason the drive won't go all the way up EASY then something is wrong.
If the unit still shifts and it's not binding I wouldn't worry too much about the bubble.Check the shifting.J

Re: In process of changing water pump found gear oil

ok i do remember the shift rod moving up and i belive i could only turn it counterclockise. but i would twist it to the left in little increments to get it to align.
So your stating that the lower unit will go all the way up flush to the driveshaft housing? that didnt happen to me at all. So im doing something wrong for sure if thats the case. This may help i had to hammer off the lower unit when i had the nuts off. it didnt just come off easily either. Im starting to think i didnt have it in the foward gear.
