Hi all. First of, thanks ODDD1 for the stator diagnostics on my merc 150. I put the new one in and she runs perfect again. I came across a boat this past weekend that these people are selling and just want to get rid of it. It's a 1986 Wellcraft 192 American Scarab cuddy with a Mercruiser 170 i/o and a Alpha1 sterndrive. They never ran the boat (got it 2 years ago when brother passed) so i picked it up yesterday to test run it to see if everything is okay with it before i make a decision. The only thing is, i don't know much about these boats and i/o's. The 4banger runs perfect, the hull is in great shape and the interior needs a little TLC. The prop was all banged up (rest of the bottom end okay) but i found a spare under the seat. Last night, i threw the spare on and took it out for a run (after i changed the oil, lower end, gas...blahblah) The motor ran great and she handled smooth but i just couldn't get her to stop cavitating. I trimmed her up, down and all around. I could ease her up and play with the trim ever so slightly to get her to speed but it took a lot of work to get her there. Also, i checked to make sure the prop wasn't slipping on the shaft and the splines are all perfect. The prop that was originally on there said 826074...26 and the spare i put on says 48-58424-21. So here are my questions..(sorry so long winded!)

1 - Could the spare be so wrong and causing all the cavitation?

2 - which prop (size - pitch) should i run on that boat/motor for all around performance?

3 - My Merc outboard blows most of all the exhaust out of the prop. This I/O seems to be blowing some out the prop and a lot out of around where the sterndrive comes out of the back of the boat. Is this correct? If not, maybe this is why the prop has a hard time biting. Possibly a hose from inside exhaust manifold is cracked the suppose to be blowing all the exhaust out of the prop?

4 - All these Mercruiser 170's any good?

5 - What's a decent price going for a boat like this? I think i can pick this one up for around $1500. They're my buddies neighbors so i know they're just not yanking my cord.

Any info to any of this LONG post would be appreciated. I know how to work on that 4cyl in and out, just everything else i'm still sort of new too!

Thanks - Jersey
