In Line Fuel Filter

I've just purchase an in line fuel filter for temporary start-ups of my fuel injected 150 HP Suzuki O/B. I'm using a small auxiliary tank that bypasses my water separator/filter and want to run fresh, clean gas through my motor for several minutes about twice a month until I can get some work done on my boat. The filter is a Seachoice model 20941 in line filter but says that it is for all carbureted gas engines. It also says that it is not to be used in fuel injected engines. Can anyone tell me why it is not wise to use this filter for fuel-injected motors, aside from the warning on the packaging?

Thanks,
Dave

Re: In Line Fuel Filter

Your fuel injection system runs with more then 35psi of pressure... a carb outboard usually has 3 to 5 psi... If the paper filter element breaks down "and it probably will" your are going to plug your injectors... which will lean out a cylinder or two and likely fry a couple of pistons.. major bucks... You can gable if you want but you should be able to get a filter for around 12 bucks at the auto parts store... here's a cross refrence for the ones we use on our Race Mercs... they should be fine for your application...

Wix-33482
Interfil-FGI-10110
Mighty- GF482
Fram-G3870
Purolator-F33165
AcDelco-GF482
Champ-G6332

The only thing that might be different is the fuel line size... you might have to get an addaptor if your lines are smaller...

It is always a good idea to run a filter after the pump in a EFI motor... mainly to protect the injectors from getting plugged with parts from a worn fuel pump... Injectors are expensive!!! but most of the cooling in a 2cycle comes from the fuel so if you plug an injector you are going to melt the piston that gets it's fuel from that injector... Change the water seperator cartridge and the fuel filter at least once a season....

Re: In Line Fuel Filter

Thanks HowieDean. I'm grateful for the quick and detailed reply. You have potentially saved me a tremendous amount of grief and expense. I'll definitely not run this filter and will get one designed for EFI engines on Monday.

Cheers,
Dave
