In line fuel filter with a fuel water separator

I have a 1988 88hp Johnson and would like any input on the benefits of using an in-line fuel filter with a fuel water separator. My gut tells me this is overkill and that the addtion of one more fuel filter would make the fuel pump work that much harder. Any feedback.

if you have a built in fuel tank, it is a must, these tanks are known to accumulate water, condensation. if you do not want to be left stranded, get one. if you are using 6 gallon portable tanks, don't worry about it. buy the way that is a great outboard motor. bullet proof, if maintained.

I currently have a 55hp 2cyl running a Sierra fuel/water separater and also have a clear inline filter in the hose, after the separater. I mainly left it there to make sure I'm getting fuel flow. It hasn't seemed to hurt the motor so far, but I may still remove it soon, since I have heard numerous times that it's overkill and is useless.

We'll assume the in-line filter is clean and does not create a restriction. On the motors mentioned it's usually OK and presents no problems. Some motors come with an in-line filter from the factory. If you think it's causing a problem, run a pressure / vacuume test or remove it and make a test run. On a V4 looper and any V6 the extra in-line filter can create a fuel restriction which leads to performance issues or worse. On a V8 it's a horrible no-no.

Put the filter in 4 years ago (built in tank of 75 liters) and never found any trace of water.....? So still not sure about the benefit, but better safe than sorry

Re: In line fuel filter with a fuel water separator

Do people usually remove the motor's internal filter after installing a separate, external one?

On my 1989 70 it looks just about impossible to get to the internal filter without pulling the carbs off, and since the previous owner of my boat installed an external filter, I am thinking of eventually taking the internal one out and just using a straight piece of fuel line.

when i change my hoses, that is what i do, if it has a separator. for many, many years, they only had the screen in the fuel pump for a filter. which the vro and oms pumps do not have, the reason for the inline filter being added.

Thanks tashasdaddy on the encouragement about the motor, I have had no experience with Johnson outboards and I am hoping that this is a dependable motor. I had my outboard mechanic check everything out and he said it was in great shape. I have not tested it yet. I purchased the boat (17ft Invader center console) about 3 weeks ago and I am really looking forward to using it.
