As stated before I'm getting two new 5.7 L. Crusaders. I had a problem with hydro locking at start up ( backfiring ). The dealer suggested installing in- line flappers. He's willing to pay for this. Is this necessary on a straight inboard application? I don't know a lot about this application. I have heard of this application on stern drives, just not inboards.

Re: in-line flappers

Without exhaust flappers and an adaquite static line (the distance from the waterline to the bottom of the high point of the risers) water can get into the engine through the exhaust manifolds and cause much damage. I just replaced my engine for this reason.

Re: in-line flappers

thanks, The boat is a 1987 Aquasport tm. with side exhausts. I don't know if this has been a problem with all engines in these boats, ( omc, mercruiser, crusader, etc.) I personally don't know anyone else with an Aquasport like mine to compare notes with. The static line mentioned is definately something to look at. It seems as though the risers are significantly higher than the exhaust ports but looks can be deceiving. On average, how long do these flappers last? Salt water boat here!

Re: in-line flappers

I'm not sure there is a good answer to that question. I have had very bad luck with flappers possibly because of too much motor or high compression. I hope that Merc didn't design theirs to only last a few months. My advice is to check there condition often.

Olds, I was informed that the flappers should be at least 18" from the risers. Were yours at the same length? I'm a little nervous after reading your post. The engines are going in this week and I still have the option to omit the flappers. thanks
