In gear while starting??? Honda 7.5

I just bought a used 80's Honda 7.5. When I try the pull starter it is really hard to pull, and I noticed the prop spins when I pull making me think it is in gear or engaged even though the gear lever is in N - nuetral.

Also the gear lever will not go all the way into reverse - I see the rocker detents in the gear but it just wont go. I am guessing the trans. needs adjustment - agree? I assume the prop should never move when you try to pull start. The prop turned as if in reverse (clockwise) when in nuetral if that helps.

So, should the prop spin when starting?
Is there a fix to adjust the transmission?

Thanks!

It seems you haven't run the motor yet.?
Speaking generically first Sometimes the prop will rotate some in neutral. But if turned at the prop by hand the prop will rotate freely in neutral. Some motors the prop will rotate freely by hand in one direction when in gear.Other motors the prop will rotate about 1/4 turn by hand in gear.
Sometimes When not running an outboard won't go into gear unless you crank a little as you shift.
Yes if the prop is truly ingaged something is amiss, needs repair or adjustment. Many outboards won't crank at all if in gear.

I have a similar problem but the pull starter won't pull at all. I checked it out while in the water (no trailer for the boat) and here's what I found out:

1. starter cord won't pull at all.
2. engine not seized because it still turns back and forth just a bit.
3. prop turns in neutral.
4. prop won't turn in forward or reverse.
5. gear shift moves nicely between gears.

Any ideas on further troubleshooting or what might be broke? This is an '81 BF75 and I just bought the boat and motor.

Thanks for any advice!
BT
