Hi Guys-new to the site-Thanks for reading this.
Last weekend I loaded my 2010, 9.8, 4 stroke into the truck and drove approx 100 miles to the lake, with the motor on the wrong side! Won't repeat the names i called myself.
Predictably, oil got into the cylinders. I drained that out, enough so that now, with new plugs, I only see gas on the plugs, when trying to start.
With new plugs and multiple cycles of removing, drying plugs, pulling start rope to "air out" cylinders, she still won't fire.

Where to go from here? Could oil have gotten into the carb? exhaust? The plugs do appear quite wet, fuel not oil, after just a couple of pulls on the rope.

Any help appreciated--Thanks!

Don't have a 4-stroke outboard, but have worked on a few land locked 4-cycles.

Guessing oil entered combustion chamber through an open valve. If it fouled the exhaust it should fire, but wouldn't run well. If it entered the carb through an open intake valve, it would do what you describe.

Probably should pull the carb and check for engine oil fouling and use cleaner if indicated. If it were me, I'd also take the spark plug out, pour some 50:1 in the combustion chamber , slosh it around and pour it out. Let that dry out, reinstall plug and give it a go.

good luck

Most of them have a drain screw on the carb bowl, loosen it up and drain whatever is in there, pump fresh fuel in the carb till it comes out clean. If it works,it'll save ya trouble of removing the carb. If it dont, well pull the carb anyway.

Hey, just read my reply again and saw my mind had slipped back in 2-cycle. If you clean the combustion chamber use 50:0. And, grub is right if you can clean out the carb w/o removing it great. I've just usually not that lucky. good luck

Re: improperly transported 9.8 tohatsu

grub and edmo; Thank you both for the info.
i did find a drain screw on the carb, and i think that is going to be my key. i was able to drain and pump thru a maybe a pint or so of new fresh fuel. the stuff that was in there was pretty oily.
got that done tonight and ran out of time. will get back on it tommorrow night, but i think that's going to be my break.

Thanks, again!

anybody else with any more tips, please feel free!

You are on the right track. Odds are that oil filled the carb. Now that you have real fuel to run on, it should fire, but may require many pulls of the recoil to get it going. It will smoke like crazy as all the oil burns off. If, after the smoke clears, the plugs look OK, you will be fine. If they are all black with oil carbon, best to install a new pair.

Well Guys, I did get 'er fired up tonight!
It did indeed take a few pulls on the rope, and she did smoke like a damp wood campfire for a few minutes, but she's back up and runnin'!!

Many Thanks!

The plugs did look a little dingy, so I put them in some mineral spirits to soak. I already had another pair on hand, so put them in, tried again, and she took off on the second pull.

Can't Thank ya'll enough, and my better half says Thanks, as well!!

In the words of Red Green, "If it aint broke, you aint tryin hard enough"! Thanks, rush1892
