Has anybody imported a sailboat into the U.S. before? I am a U.S. citizen and I am having a sailboat built in France. I want to "document" the vessel and return to the U.S. within two to five years. I have read that the boat must meet all U.S. Coast Guard safety standards at time of manufacture. What do I need to do and what must I watch out for? I have contacted two U.S. documentation services "outfits" who told me I just have to submit the "normal" documentation paperwork. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

Can't document unless it is five net tons. For documentation, you need to decide on the homeport, and then you would use the CG documentation office in that area. I would decide that and then give them a call. If you need more specific guidance I can give you all the CFR cites that guide the process.
