Importing a sailboat into the U.S.A.

Has anybody imported a sailboat into the U.S. before? I am a U.S. citizen and I am having a sailboat built in France. I want to "document" the vessel and return to the U.S. within two to five years. I have read that the boat must meet all U.S. Coast Guard safety standards at time of manufacture. What do I need to do and what must I watch out for? I have contacted two U.S. documentation services "outfits" who told me I just have to submit the "normal" documentation paperwork. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can't document unless it is five net tons. For documentation, you need to decide on the homeport, and then you would use the CG documentation office in that area. I would decide that and then give them a call. If you need more specific guidance I can give you all the CFR cites that guide the process.
