Importance of Confidence?

When I'm fishing for white bass or stripers, I expect to catch a fish every time my lure hits the water...sometimes I'm surprised if it comes back empty. But largemouth bass fishing is a different story altogether, more often than not I'm surprised when I get strikes.

Talking about lure selection, colors, what ever, I hear this a lot: "whatever you have confidence in." Of course if you have confidence in a particular bait you'll use it more often. But it's hard to understand how the fisherman's attitude can affect which lures will be effective.

what's the deal?

Confidence in the bait you are using has more to do with catching Bass than lure selection IMHO.

Why??? Because you will work the lure differently if you have confidence in it, just like you expect to catch a White Bass or Striper every cast.

I have a hard time trying something new because I dont have confidence in it yet. For instance I dont have confidence in drop shotting or carolina rigging yet, even though I know from what I have seen on TV and read that lots of fish are caught that way. I went out one day with just those two rigs and because I didnt catch a fish right aweay I spent the time running around with my depth finder looking for differnt places I hadnt found yet.

Ld no confidence in a rig??That surprised me.lds right confidence plays a big role like on a rig i use 3 different baits that its ,on texas rig 2 different baits.and on color i have about 3 primary colors i use.thats like on a lake if you have confidence in an area your going to fish it more productive than if you just pulled up to a place blind.

I can soak a lure I'm confident in for a long time even if I'm not catching fish. At the same time, if I'm trying a different lure that I don't have confidence in yet, I may not give it enough of a chance to catch a fish. It could be the right lure for the job, but I just didn't use it long enough to find out. Patience is a virtue I will always have room to improve on with fishing!

I think it's more important to have confidence in the location you're fishing than in the lure itself. To me, figuring out the best location based on fish movement depending on the season as well as which depth and cover the fish will be at is more important that the lure. I've got many, many lures and I have confidence in them that they'll catch fish as long as I'm presenting the lures in the proper location, depth, speed and desired action necessary.

What you say is true, but you already have confidence in the lures you are using, so you have reached that goal. You have just moved on. Also Id like to say that its not as much confidence in where you are fishing as much as it is that you have learned where fish hang out during certain conditions and times of the year.

So where would you be on a new body of water? Back to having confidence in your bait.
