Hello, I am try to replace an Impellor on a 1985 Johnson. I have a problem, I can not remove the actual impellor, the black spline think from the driveshaft. I have tried a lot of things with no luck. Is there a trick to removing the impellor?<br />Thankyou

Re: Impellor removal

I'm visualizing maybe a v-4 Johnson Tommo, but can't be sure unless you specify which engine you have.<br />Assuming so,the impeller is likely froze in place aginst the driveshaft and impeller key which will require a shocking force with a small chisel and hammer on the impeller hub in a rotation direction to dislodge. Some pentetrating oil may also help with this technique.Last resort option is some concentrated heat to the impeller hub.If heat is required ,you'll want to replace the driveshaft seal under the waterpump.

Or you could just cut the old impeller off with a hack saw if you're careful.

While you're there, change the pump as a kit, not just the impeller.

Re: Impellor removal

If you have a dremmel tool with a little cut off blade, that works REAL good at getting them off. Just cut a good slot in it and then take a wide chisel and give it a smack. Pops right apart.

Tommo....I believe that on the 4 horse, the drive shaft will just pull up and out of the gear case once the impeller housing is removed. Would make it real easy, then, to get the old impeller off.

It's a small rotary tool that does everything.....<br /><br /> http://au.dremel.com/HTML/home_fr.html <br /><br />they cost a fair bit here in Australia. <br />The easier option if you don't have one is to cut the old impeller off with a hack-saw. Be careful not to damage the drive shaft.

Have you seen the Sears version of the Dremmel, Lark. Nice tool. A little less expensive than the original Dremmel.

we don't have Sears in Aus. But there are a few cheaper copies here as well. They are OK, but not as good as the real thing.
