Impellor question

I changed the impellor on my outboard (25hp 2006 2 stroke) today .I put it in a barrel of water it didn't pump anything. I pulled the impellor apart and it look like it ran dry with small flats on the edge of the vanes. I flip the impellor over so flats where on the back end of the vanes and reassembled as before. This time I used water muffs and everything worked fine .I put it back in the barrel of water and it pumped water. My question is it best to prime water pump with muffs when using for the first time after changing impellor. Maybe I spun the shaft the wrong way when assembling water pump and vanes where facing the wrong way? Anyway it pumps plenty of water now and I'm hoping the small flat on vanes won't be a problem.

Did you lube the impeller/liner when assembling water pump ? if not should have lightly lube impeller and liner with soapy water, vaseline, cooking oil if you like, any soft product that will lube both. Have never installed a impeller backwards, vanes should be restored to its original CW rotation when engine is on.

Strange a new impellor running dry when LU was submersed on a barrel. Did you change complete WP kit or just impellor ? personally am a not big fan of changing complete wp kits as liner can last extremely long. Was liner scuffed with circular lines when assembling new impeller ?if so, that issue could be the culprit new impellor got flats on vanes's edges.

If you want to install a new impeller on previous factory delivered liner, get a highly used 3M green scotch pad, dip it in water, apply an overdose of any tootpaste and while holding it against liner with finger gently rub the round and upper inside liner portion in continuous circular motion, reaply thoothpaste if needed untill you get rid of all those unwanted scuffed circular lines which will wear out new impeller prematurely. Impeller will exponentially increase it's water flow and life span.

Find Tohatsu's impellers to outlast any other brand in duration, are reversable and will restore its upright condition when taken out of liner while other brands will be liner shaped hardened.
