I bought my first pontoon about month ago, and it has a 2005 evinrude 40 hp etec outboard water ready. Put it lake for the rest of season & I started to notice algae type crud attaching to the lower unit. First could that build up & block the water passage to the impeller. The motor is to heavy & the way the back of pontoon is cannot be tilted out of water. Second ( maybe not politically correct) but what a idea cut window screen & place around the area of the water inlets & attach zip ties around top & bottom. I've read up on motor it seems like a fantastic motor & I don"t want to hurt it. Thanks for any advice

I think your fine to do nothing but that scenario does not happen here. Saltwater is my issue. I'd say you need to devise a way to fresh water rinse it from time to time.

I'm a E-tec owner and there pretty impressive. You need to "learn up" on them though....here is the best web site for Etec's

download your manual and suggest you acquire the software to service your engine if ever you get "codes"
User GEB on theTEC board provides much documentation like this write -up on EV diagnostics
btw both 2002-006 and the 2007 books provide pretty much all the info you need.

the best you can do for your ETEC is ALWAYS feed it clean fuel with a 10u water separator, change gear oil annually and change impeller about 3-5 years max. wouldn't worry to much about water intakes. window screen would get plugged up even faster !

Gee, scrub it with a brush or use it more often. Using the boat will tend to keep the gearcase clean.
