iboats sells water pump repair kits, impeller repair kits, and just impellers. For a motor that's been sitting up for a while, which do you recommend? There are no issues with the pump, rather this is just preventative maintenance. I've never replaced an impeller and didn't know if I could simply swap out the impellers without messing any gaskets and O-rings.

Also, is there a preference in Sierra vs Mallory?

Re: Impeller

I only install factory impellers.--------Most likely all you need is an impeller.--But inspect the parts that you have first.----Shops will often promote complete kits to make an extra penny.--And it sort of makes sure that the owner will not come back for rework.----Totally different scenario to someone doing their own work.

Re: Impeller

Best way to tell is to pull the pump and open it. If it was run in and area with a lot of shallow water with soft or sandy bottoms then it might need a kit.

I have used the Sierra pump kits many times. None have failed yet.

Best thing to do is get a factory service manual which you will use for any problems later on.

Re: Impeller

If repairing a customer's motor, I would probably use factory/manufacturer parts as stated above. That's if I had a customer -- and he had a motor. But I just do my own stuff as a hobby, and have usually used Sierra impellers without any problems. I wouldn't be suing myself, though, or complaining about work done. A manual is really necessary (at least a parts manual or diagram) if you haven't done an impeller before, and/or aren't sure what parts are in a kit, and where they would go.

Re: Impeller

Sierra tells me they have rectified their impeller issues now. They had a terrible failure rate for a while. I have personally pulled out dozens that had the hub break free from the rubber, or have the keyway tear a groove through the hub rendering them useless. Ill stay away a touch longer until I stop hearing about issues. I find the rest of the Sierra line very good. I still buy almost all OEM parts though. For one, we have to support the guys that MAKE the motor right.

Re: Impeller

I wonder if there is an aftermarket salt water model that would be a better bet. Probably only factory part. I usually go for what's more readily available (OK and cheaper, probably), but any of the motors I work on have light use.

Really eh that is interesting. Wonder why they would do that? Was it something not available maybe? I believe they have the issues worked out by now with them.

Re: Impeller

Thanks guys. I'm probably just going to take it to a shop. There's several things I want to do to it. If I try to try to do it all myself, I'll end up missing summer!

Changing a water pump is buy no means difficult. Usually can be done in less than a couple hours. Go to youtube there are lots of videos there that will show you how to do it.

Re: Impeller

I am with Racerone on this one. For the difference in price, I would go with a factory impeller all day long. Changing the impeller is really an easy do-it-yourself project....if you understand the fundamentals. Dropping the lower unit (especially if used in salt water) can sometimes be a challenge.

Re: Impeller

Could someone point me to an OEM impeller and or water pump repair kit for an '84 Johnson 150 V6? All I can find are the Mallory and Sierras. I think I'm going to try to do it myself.

iboats doesn't carry, its against the rules to post a link to the place that does, ive tried before it wont show up, you will have to search on the web, it will be one of the first that comes up

Re: Impeller

Glad to hear you're going to give it a go.

As I suggested, watch a few youtube videos and you'll be on your way. Best thing is that's all that's needed are simple hand tools, some clean rags an hour or two and a cold drink.

Re: Impeller

Lol thanks. I'm going to pull the lower after church tomorrow and see if I need just the impeller or if I need the whole rebuild kit. No cold ones available on Sundays in my county. So if things get rough, I may have make a run across the state line. Lol

Re: Impeller

Just make sure you take your time and make sure all lower unit bolts are disconnected.....INCLUDING the one under the trim tab. Also be sure you disconnect the gear case shift rod under the bottom carb. Once you get the lower unit off, the rest is cake.

Re: Impeller

since everything is pretty much internet/mail/phone order these days, I recommend Fariwinds Marina in Annapolis, Md. They should be able to send you a factory impeller or kit for your motor.
