I have a 93 johnson 225hp ocean runner and i was driving it the other day and it runs idle speed fine but when i try to speed up it stalls out. i think it may be the impeller because when i got home and hooked it up to the hose, i could put it in drive and it was fine. so it seems like it needs more water pressure to get it to go faster? any other ideas?

also if it is the impeller, i know id have to take off the lower unit. is this easy to do? and does anyone have instructions i could look at?

Re: impeller

The impeller is what drives the water in your water pump. If it is overheating it should run in slow mode and 1500 rpms seems about right. Put your hand on the heads and see if you can hold it there for a long three or four count before you have to jerk it away and crack your elbow on whatever is close. You didn't say that it was overheating so I will suppose that it isn't. If you are going to change the impeller yourself do yourself a favor and get a manual. If you won't spring for one then go to the library and look at theirs. I don't know that I would try to rev it too high on muffs. Check your spark. Cheap spark tester will work from any cheap auto parts store. yellow or orange is no good. blue is the only spark you want. You might have a coil or twobreaking down under a load. Might be time for the carbs to be taken off and cleaned thoroughly too.
