I have a 87 Mercury 50 horse and when you idle along, it doesn't spit water out the **** hole. When you pick up speed it does but I was told that it wasn't enough. do i need to change the impeller or what?? Open for some...HELP... Also, is there anything to use to stop seepage around revits on the bottom of the boat??

Change it. Less than $20 if you do it yourself. Mine did the same thing when I got it. I changed the Imp and it's fine now at idle.
I usually change Imp every 3 years anyway.
Terry G.

Re: Impeller

Hi,
I have just bought back my boat from its first test after a 15 month lower unit repair. Same problem! After 10 mins I got a heat alarm even though the heads didn't seem too hot. Shut down and cooled down and then idled to the beach.
In my case I think it is a small leak between the water pump and the tube that carries the water to the power head. The pee hole on my outboard is connected to the water passage cooling the head. No water means either blocked pee hole or no water cooling your engine. As it works at higher revs probably lack of water. Suspect pump and joints in the water path.
Good Luck
Hope to be joining you guys out on the water soon.

I´m not sure if your engine is a 4 in line, but if it´s so, and after replacing water impeller doesn´t works proprely, check the exhaust deck.

the output to the **** hole goes thru this deck and normally, on salt water, appears an obstuction that only afects to the **** hole, but nevetheless is better to keep clean.

Sorry for my english,

Good luck!

Re: Impeller

Back again,
I had this problem on my boat and I'm just back from my test run. Now it's fixed. My problem, I had assembled the water pump wrong. The plate at the bottom of the pump needs to have the water inlet on the opposite side to the outlet in the housing. i put it in upside down so inlet and outlet were on the same side. Result no water pressure from the pump but at speed the water forces its way through the motor.
best regards

Hi 1956,
In answer to your second question;it's easy if you have an air chisel. Get one of your bits cut one end off and grind a concave spot on the end, have someone hold a heavy piece of metal on one side while you give the air hammer a short burst on the other side of the rivit. this will tighten that old rivit right up. By the way,a rivit bit can be purchased, but I don't know where. I have two of them, and don't rember how I came by either one.
Hope this helps
