The water pump sits on top of the lower unit. You need to disconnect the shift rod and drop the lower unit to access it. If you've not done this before, get a service manual for your engine or at least have someone help you that has done it before. Your local library may have a service manual you can check out or copy the procedure from. Don't forget the nut under the trim tab.

refering to the plates either side of the lower unit, is that where the connection for the shift linkage is? from the schematic it would appear so but it doesn't really say

Why not just get a Service Manual that will take you through the impeller change step by step? If nothing else, pay a visit to your local library. They usually carry the generic service manuals from Seloc and Clymers....might even get lucky and get a good one. It would help you out tremendously.

library doesn't carry one<br /><br />being quite capable of doing the job, i was merely looking for some technical advice or some shop trick not in the book, if you couldn't provide that info why reply?

This is becoming quite common. Someone comes on here seeking free advice and when they are advised to get a manual they become un-appreciative and get testy with guys that don't get paid a darn dime to give answers. Well, I'm just tired of it.<br />5678910, take your motor to a shop and pay a mechanic to work on it.

Well.....#10.....here's how you do it...<br /><br />First..you get up under the lower carb from the port side of the engine (that's left if you didn't know) and remove the screw pin from the shift lever that's holding the shift rod. Helps if the shift control....that's that handle you move to make it go fast...if you didn't know...is in reverse.<br /><br />Then you tilt the engine up, remove the trim tab...(that's the little fin hanging down over the back of the prop if you didn't know) and remove the bolt under the trim tab.<br /><br />There is another bolt just forward of the trim tab that also needs removed....be carful not to remove the bolt holding the anode in place. The head will take a 5/8 socket.<br /><br />Then remove the four remaining bolts just over the anti-cavitation plate...that's the fin right over the prop if you didnt' know that....and the lower unit should drop off.... with a little help sometimes.<br /><br />The rest is up to you. <br /><br />Thanks very much for posting on iboats.<br /><br />I'm done.

567890,Your question as to what the two plates were with the four bolts was answered above by Dave.Nothing behind those plates except rubber dampers.Shift rod disconnect is under the lower carb area.Attempting the lower unit service for the first time without a manual as a guide ,will require forum members to write one for you to explain many of the critical points.Many of these guys including myself have already written out the procedure in literally hundreds of other topics.If you'll perform a search on these forums using specific key words,I'm confident that all the info is right here.<br />To simply ask ,"how do I change the impeller?" is a bit like asking,"how do I do my taxes?" Short question,looooooong written answer.Not always, but many times,original poster never replies.<br /><br />There are a few other items you need to consider inspecting/replacing when the lower unit is down for service.Inner exhaust housing rubber seals and water tube grommet ,just to mention a couple.

thanks for the info. i didnt expect anyone to re write a manual for me but being in a repair& maint forum i did expect info to flow more freely. usually on a site of this type people can't wait to answer your question even if it appears dumb to the rest of the group. not being an outboard mechanic and not being able to run out and buy a manual this week i thought it wise to ask the "dumb question" before makig a " stupid mistake".
