I need to change the impeller on my 2005 90 hp Johnson but I do not know where to disconnect the shift rod. Any help or instruction would be appreciated.

i'm not sure about your particular year, but usually there is a bolt down below the carbs. it is a little hard to get to. i use a socket and a extension with a universal joint, and a telescoping magnet to retrieve and to re-insert. hope this helps.

I BELIEVE on that one it is as suggested under the carb... Look on the starboard side I believe... Might have to shift and finnagle a little but not to hard to get too... Some have it behind the water intake screen, but I'm pretty sure yours is under the carb.

Re: Impeller / shift rod

Jack B, i do a lot of them. people will argue this point, but i find it much easier, and quicker to pull the carbs, and starter. to get to the connection. i also usually clean and rebuild the carbs at the same time. reconnecting it is much easier with 2 people.

i have a helper, we have worked out a system, we both work on getting the carb and starter of. i take the carbs, he drops the lower, while i do the carbs, he does the lower unit, impeller, oil change. then i help him get the lower reinstalled, and i install the carbs, then we button it back up. you have refreshed motor for a couple of more years.

Jack, My '98 Johnny 150HP motot has a clevis pin under the lowest starboard carb. Pull the pin with a finger or needlenose and slide the linkage to release the shift rod. Real easy

I agree completely with TD. The space below the carbs is so limited, it gives you a crowd of room just by removing them, If your not going to rebuild the carbs, then just remove the lower carb and starter, should have enough room then. The rest is easy cheezy:D:D

Jack, the info you're getting is confusing because you didn't mention which 2005 90hp you have. I assume from your post (kinda reading between the lines) you have the 60* 115 V4 and not the 3 cylinder E-Tec. If so, you simply remove the clip and slide the rod over. Nothing to unbolt as you may have been led to believe. Let us know if you are talking about an E-Tec, it's different.

Re: Impeller / shift rod

Jack, I just did mine last week on a 2000 90 Hp Johnson 60* V4 Looper. Take off the "R" clip on the shift linkage and push the rod to the port side, you may have to fiddle with it to get it off. My manual said to put into foreward gear to do this. It wasn't too bad getting it off, but getting it back on was not too easy. I disconnected the linkage and used a pair of locking needle nose pliers to fiddle with the rod under the engine hood while looking at the shaft to line up the hole with the linkage disconnected.

I got the shift linkage off at the top and I removed all 5 bolts on the foot and I still cannot drop the foot of the motor. It did separate about 1/64" on the forward side of the motor. It is a 2005 Johnson 2 stroke. This is the first time the foot has removed, does that make it a little tougher?

Which way should the impeller spin on the shaft if you are looking down and forward?
