Ski started taking on water, pulled it out and filled the bilge with water and watched it leak out the take grate. Pulled the grate off and found it leaking past the seal of the impeller shaft as it comes out of the hull. Does anyone know if you have to pull the engine out of the ski to replace the seal?

Re: Impeller Shaft seal leak

There is a rubber seal that is fitted around the shaft, I am trying to figure out how to remove it. I think I have to take the motor out, remove the impeller and take the entire shaft out in order to replace the seal. Sounds like a lot of work, any idea if this is true. I removed the plastic cover that protects the drive shaft coupling. Then the 4 bolts that hold the aluminum cover on the thru hull housing for the shaft, now I am trying to figure out what to do.....

you can't replace the seal and you would not accomplish anything if you did,, it is a sealed bearing and the bearing is bad that allowed the shaft to eat up the seal,, you need to replace the drive shaft bearing assembly and you will need to pull the pump and drive shaft, move the engine forward, remove the assembly and replace it the power take off shaft from the dampener on the back of the engine is what rides in the seal and bearing assembly this has splines that the end of the drive shaft sits in, if it is leaking water it should have been vibrating and growling also. there is a grease point usually attached to a hose going to the rear of the engine,, most people never grease it because they don't know about it and the bearing fails,, it is a common occurrence.

Ahhh, thanks, that would make sense.... the ski has a little over 100 hours on it, and I'll bet the bearing was never greased... Hopefully this weekend I can start working on it.

Re: Impeller Shaft seal leak

lol, got new shaft seals, bearing, housing, still leaks...... now it leaks around the housing rather than through the shaft. I ordered all new parts for the housing the is bolted to the hull and goes through the hull. It is held on by some adhesive/sealent..... any ideas on how to break that seal and what to reseal it with?

Also, winter is setting in up here in Massachusetts, any special steps to winterize the engine. Are there drains for the block, what do I have to worry about freezing up?

if you didn't break the housing removing the old one you should be able to unbolt the new parts and put marine 5200 around it for a seal and re bolt it in place.. as for winterizing that I have a long detailed post on www.pwcweekly.com http://www.pwcweekly.com/forumdisplay.php?f=56 do that soon or you could destroy the engine.
also on a 4 stroke don't let the engine sit more than a month without rotating it periodically to keep from compressing the valve springs for a long time.
