I'm trying to solve an overheating issue on a "new" motor in an old boat I bought recently. It sure looks and sounds new, btw.
Got my new impeller (through iboats of course) and downloaded a manual. Looked like a simple swap....
1st thing I noticed was that the timing gear cover was broken and pushed away in 2 of the 3 place it is mounted. I removed the bottom allen screw and off came the cover. Looked like very new breaks in the white metal.
The old impeller looked perfect, except there was a lot of wiggle in the shaft. Pulled the whole works, and the little receptacle thing that drives the shaft fell out. (cross piece carrier et al?) There's a bolt in the center that hold that little assembly in place, and it was backed all the way out.
I thought of tightening it, but there seems to be a key or something missing from the back of the round metal piece that the cross piece carrier sits in, and the carrier itself is kinda bent inside. To my amateurish eyes, it looks like that bolt working it's way out caused the strain on the timing gear cover that broke it.
It would appear that if I put it back together, it will spin apart again, since there is nothing locking that receptacle arrangement in place. Yet I see no evidence of anything broken away, like a key. My manual is of no help here, and I can't find any similar threads here...
If anyone has seen this problem, or knows how that bolt normally stays in place, please let me know.
My children will thank you while I drag them through the frigid water!
