How often should I replace the impeller in my '01 90hp Johnson? Do you normally replace the pump housing as well or just the impeller?

Thanks!!

Re: Impeller replacement

2-3 years and as long as the housing looks good, just the impeller is fine.

Ya, thats about what I thought. I'm pretty sure the one in my motor is original.

The guy I bought it from said he hadn't done anything to the motor except change the lower unit oil every season along with a couple spark plug changes. He gave me his copy of the operation and maintenance manual that came with the motor. There is no mention of the impeller in the manual, not in the Overheating section or in the maintenance schedule. Such a useful little book.

Fortunately, when we test ran the motor, it seemed to still be pumping well out of the tell tail.

Is it a difficult job to swap the impeller? My Volvo I/O is on front of my motor. 5 minutes. done.

Not really, however there is one part that is make or break.....disconnecting the shift rod. I was able to do my '73 85 myself. I was not able to (confidently without breaking other things) get to it on my '81 90. My buddy who is actually less mechanical than me was able to do his on his '90 90 fine. So assuming you can get to that darn bolt or screw....it's not a bad job.

Thanks EZ, I'm going to give it a shot, before the water softens up.

The shift rod screw is easy with the right tools. I use a 12" long 1/4" drive extension and a swivel socket ... easy.

Re: Impeller replacement

I picked up my water pump kit today and was reading through the instructions.

There are a couple items I don't have that are listed in the instructions

1. triple guard grease. Can I get away with some generic marine grease I've got.
2. gasket sealing compound. I've got Permatex 3, airplane gasket sealent. Will that work?
3. Adhesive 847. Whats that? Is there an alternative?

thanks for the help.

Re: Impeller replacement

hey guys, I need a little more help.

I'm trying to remove the lower unit but can't seem to get it loose. I'm following the clymers manual which I know isn't the best, but according to clymers, on my 60 deg, v4 motor, I simply pull the pin in the shift linkage and push the linkage toward the power head and that is supposed to release the shift shaft. the linkage moves about a 1/4 inch. Well I did that, removed all the bolts, and tried to pull the lower but it won't come out. It comes out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and stops.

What am I doing wrong? Or what am I missing???

Re: Impeller replacement

Use marine grease instead of triple guard. Use the Permetex aviation gasket( with the brush in the cap) to coat the entire waterpump base gasket. use some permatex #2 to stick the orings into the water pump cover under the lines and in the edge of the cover.

See my other post on releasing the shift rod
