Hello, I have a 1984 evinrude 9.9 short shaft. Getting ready to change out the impeller when it arrives in the mail. My question is can i use the long shaft grommet that comes with the kit. I read that it definitely helps with alignment of the water tube, but on the 1984 wasn't sure if it would block any water passages?

I use the one that’s the same size.. should have no trouble aligning.
Good luck!

Yeah I read on Leeroys ramblings you could use either or depending on model. Just curious if someone personally done it..

Interesting. I have an '82 and an '84 Yachtwin, and didn't remember different grommets. Looking at a kit, however, there appears to be one with a larger diameter lip -- don't remember if I used that in the Yachtwin or not.

Anyway, it might be a good idea to use it in yours if it fits into the impeller housing (presumably would). It's always possible to crimp the lip of the grommet when reassembling a lower unit, and the larger grommet might help avoid that.

Yessir it will definitely fit, it’s just longer and exactly what you said about crimping the other one. There was an article about it in LeeRoy’s Ramblings. Something about certain year housings you had to drill some drain holes beside the pickup tube.Thx
