Impeller problems

I have a 1990 3.0 volvo penta motor with cobra out drive I had new impeller installed week or so ago motor is still over heating pulled impeller back out it was melted looking put in new one same thing happened it does not over heat with hose hooked to it only when in the water at idle at lake it seems there is no water in the impeller it self does anyone no what this might be thank you.

Have you had any work done to it recently? Try putting some grease on the impeller before you install it again. That will help it start to spin initially. When you tear back into it, get a water hose and push water up through the tube that the impeller pushes water through and make sure that it is not clogged up.

Check the wear plate and housing for grooves or signs of overheating.These can get hot and distort and melt.When reinstalling the impeller coat the impeller and the inside of the housing with some vasilene.

What part is melted, top and bottom, sides, or all? Is there sand in there when you pulled it off? I have seen sand trapped in the waterjacket do this.

Hopefully the MODERATORS will notice this and move your posting into the VOLVO forum.

With that out of the way, inspect the water hose fitting on the outdrive, older Volvo drives have a habit of corroding this fitting and sucking air into the cooling system. When it gets too much leak the motor overheats and the impellers start melting.

It worked while on the hose as the hose was pressurizing the system.

I doubt it belongs here in the Volvo forum either, but will wait for the OP to answer a few questions. Since Volvo didn't even use the 3.0L in 1990, I'm wondering if the engine has been changed, and the drive is the standard OMC Cobra with the raw water pump on the drive ? What say Chris?
