impeller old merc 500

hello , i am trying to get at the water pump and have all the old stubburn bolts off but the gear case will only drop down about three inches something is holding the driveshaft up top ? i never did this before and don't want to force anything thank you for any help

When I changed my impeller in my 75 hp, it took a little force to get it off and back on.

it's out had to give it a little more pull. getting it back in with the shifter right is gonna be another thread .a 1965' 50hp from the looks of the impeller it's has not been apart for a long while .thanks alot Mdub and coolguy147 .i never did this before and this old thing might just work out

hey i got a 1961 merc500. having trouble getting impeller out can u give me a picture of yours pump and tell me how u got it out?

can't send picturures .carefully pry the water pump housing off the gaskit
