99 VP 4.3L GL - Serial # 4110174004 with a Volvo SX Drive

Howdy - Finally got my life squared away and talked my wife into letting me get a boat - 1999 Four Winns Horizon 180 LX. For an older boat, it's looking pretty good. There's an hour meter wired to the engine - not part of the gauge cluster - that shows 173 hours. The motor looks pretty much new. The drive has a few dings but is otherwise pristine.

Anyway - enough about the boat...

I have scoured the web while researching whether to buy this boat and stayed up late last night trying to find the right link, but have been unable to find an easy to follow, step-by-step guide to impeller replacement.

I have the service records for the boat and do not see 'Replace Impeller' anywhere in the nine years the boat has been afloat, so I am certainly wanting to get this task completed.

Last night I ordered Impeller Kit (Johnson) 18-3081 which Sierra says is the replacement kit that fits my water pump. I also ordered the Seloc manual. In my searching I saw lots of DIYers tackling this project, but none that really offered a step by step guide. While I have tools and have done a fair amount of tinkering on cars, I've never stuck my head in a boat's engine compartment - up until I bought the boat this past Sunday, so I'm looking for something easy to follow, since I'd pretty much be devastated if I fouled up the boat I finally just got in my driveway.

Anyway, any and all help will certainly be appreciated.

What is the full model number of your engine/drive? Just because you have a 99 boat does not mean you have a 99 engine/drive. The reason I say this is because in the 98 to 99 years, the raw water pump was moved from being belt driven to a pump that is mounted on the crankshaft.

I would also not rely on a Seloc manual. I would purchase the Volvo ones.

Thanks for reading and replying.

Yours is what seems to be the millions dollar question.

I could take a picture of the engine, but I'm confident that it's the model with the belt drive on the water pump. In my searching for parts and info, I've become completely confused about model numbers, etc.

As far as the manual, I'll see about getting the Volvo publications.

Any good advice on what I should do about the poor performing VDO gauge cluster?

The speedometer doesn't work and the rest of the gauges seem intermitent...
