I'm sealant confused

I have read many posts regarding equivilant sealant to the M 1000 recomended by Johnson in their older books.
The local shop here says they use Gel Seal II on the crank case halves.
The book also says to put some on the bolt threads when assembling.
Is the Gel seal OK or should I try to find one of the "equivent" products like 3M 847.
What about using it on the bolts as well
The motor is a '70 4Hp and the case is just a flat surface mated together
Thanks

Permatex 51813 is a substitute/equivalent of Gel Seal II
Available at auto parts stores.

most autoparts sell permatex and it works very well.
it works well and you can use it on your car too.
I don't know the numbers i use but you can read the package and make sure its designed for your application.
most are gas, oil, water and heat resistant but i would check.

Put it this way...almost any sealant designed for engines is going to be better than what OEM used back in 1970.
the sealants are much better now.

I've had very good luck with Permatex Motoseal Grey for older OMC engines that used 1000 sealer. It's primary purpose is for sealing 2-stroke crankcase halves so it's non-gapping (doesn't hold the halves apart at all) and fuel tolerant. It's a solvent dispersed synthetic rubber like 3m 847, just it's easier to find.

If you're looking for 3M 847 sealant, try your local appliance parts store. We use it alot for Washer seals. very common in the appliance industry. Our part# is EC847. also available in smaller tubes EC847S. but for the cost, you might as well buy the larger tube.
