Went to the Sandwich Antique Fair this Sunday. Always on the lookout for bargains on old lures, reels, etc. What I found was obscene! Old, beat up Heddons, balsa wood Pikie Minnows, and lots of mouse imitations. Now that's not so bad, good to see some of the old stuff still around. The bad part was some of them were going for $150.00 dollars!!!!! The booth would be full of little china cups, pictures of Elvis on velvet, photos of people you don't know from the 1800's, and for the heck of it, 5 or 6 artificials priced anywhere from $40.00 to over $100.00. Now, for old times sake, I'd be willing to pay $25.00 for a perch pattern Heddon Midget River Runt, but I'd have to use it. If I had a $150.00 lure I'd have to go swimming every time it got snagged. On the other hand, perhaps it would attract a better class of fish, a little more upscale. I did manage to stop at a small garage sale on the way out and pick up a gold plated Johnson Minnow and a Rapala made in Finland still in the boxes. $15.00 for the both of them.

Supply and demand!

Fishing lure collecting is becoming popular and they never made millions of the oldies, like they do today.

Now, where did grandpa leave that old fishin' box ;)

Speaking of oldies, a buddy of mine gave me this old rod and reel thinking I might want to use it in my fish room(room with all MY nic-nacs and fish pictures). This thing say's it's a Penn #9. Looks old as can be. The handle even looks like it's made out of ivory. It's a baitcaster. Anyone know where I can go to identify the age and value of this thing?

They still make Penn #9's and even those that are not too old can be "weathered" and look it. The handle is most likely plastic. They were and still are a cheap servicable s/w reel and almost indestructable.

I found some info on my old Penn #9. It dates back to around the 60's. The thing looks old as sin. Even has the original rod attached with oak handle and solid graphite. They have little worth but we'll see what happens in another 20yrs.
