'72, IL6, GM 250cid. got the manifold off. only broke one bolt in the manifold, on an end cap. don't care either as i got me a new one, :) (manifold and riser that is, aftermarket). i was really treading on thin ice on this one i think. got me a 14" long weld, + some epoxy on the old manifold. yikes. this lasted best i can tell from my reciepts on it from the previous owner (my dad) from 98 for the weld at least. think the epoxy from around 2000, AMAZING.
for the question. i got a couple i think.

the riser to manifold studs and nuts. what torque should i use? the studs to mount them with are fine threads on one end, the nut end, and corse on the other, manifold end. torque for stud? and torque for nut? these studs appear to be 3/8" studs.

also, i have 2 studs existing on the manifold to head, the rest were bolts. i assume done by the previous boat mech. i also assume that the proper way to be onto the manifold to head is with the studs provided by the aftermarket. these studs also pose the same question as the riser. as the head end is corse thread, and the nut end is fine thread. i understand the torque to be 23 ft. lbs on the nuts. what about the stud to head end torque? these studs appear to be 3/8" studs also.

one more torque ?. the end caps. what's the torque on themz bolts. they appear to be 1/4- 20 bolts.
man i apologize about all the torque questions as i have the oem and clymer's books, but have been unable to find the answer to these torque questions. is it there? what page? no need to answer that, i'm just courious if i really can't read or if the info is not there.

also should i use gasket sealer on any of the gaskets? i guess after looking at the gaskets supplied by the aftermarket that are sliver painted looking that i should not.

also gonna use red locktite on the corse stud end of studs, not nut end, they have lock washers. any problems there. on the end caps. should i use some locktite too?

whew,,,,,,,,,,, lot's of questions just to put a manifold back on... thanks for any insight.........jim

Re: IL6, manifold ?'s

so,,,,,,, no one knows the answer to this question ay. hum. left to my own demise i guess.

guess i will be left to useing gerneric tighting torques then.

gonna go with 8 ft lbs on the end cap bolts as they are grade 5, 1/4-20's, and am gonna use gasket sealer on them.

gonna go with 31 ft lbs on the 3/8-16 studs. i don't know what grade they are as they aint marked (punt). gonna use gasket sealer on the riser to manifold gasket, but leave the manifold to head gasket dry.

gonna use blue loc tite on end cap bolts and on the corse thread end of the studs. and tighten riser to manifold and manifold to head nuts to 23 ft. lbs. the manifold to head nuts torque spec i did find, the 23 ft. lbs. and the riser to manifold studs are the same size so i am makeing a assumtion there......

i can't believe i'm the only one that has had this question before.. but apperently so. if i break it i'll let ya all know what not to do....

one last note. the aftermarket manifold and riser company i got the parts from couldn't answer the question any better than generic torque specs either... go figure

thanks for listening & Happpppy Boating all. ziggy
