Ignition woes

I have an 85 evinrude xp 150. It’s been a work in progress. The boat sat for 9+ years. Last summer I drained the tanks, installed all new pickups. Took it out and it was a dog. This spring I got a fresh set of carbs. Installed them, did the full link up and set the timing. Took her out once again, ran like a champ! The following week we went for another outing. Wouldn’t start... upon further review of the engine I noticed a fragment of twisted metal in the flywheel. Seems that one of the magnets sheared and tore a piece off of one of the pickups on the stator. I had no spark on one bank of cylinders. After pulling the flywheel I found a large piece of the metal that was torn off. It was lodged in the stator. I have all new parts arriving soon. Stator, timer base and flywheel. Even bought magnets to rebuild my old flywheel, just to have a backup. Now here’s my question, should I be worried about the power pack? Could that rouge piece of metal have shorted it out? Or should I just put the beast back together, and give it a whirl?

Nah, that would be almost impossible (damaged power pack)

Ok 👍🏻. I’ll get it back together, and see how it goes. Thank you for the response.

Replaced the timer base, stator, and all new magnets in the flywheel. Put back together and I can’t get it to start. No spark on two cylinders.

Was able to get it running with a bit of starting fluid, but it sounds like one whole bank of cylinders is going in and out. Might just have to replace the power packs , coils and plug wires. Ugh

FYI, you were probably on borrowed time with an 85' with original ignition. I have an 87' 225 and have replaced a couple power packs, magnets, stator and regulator. I consider it maintenance. You have a good motor and everything you have done is money well spent.
